Ngala Private Game Reserve

The Unofficial Guide

An independent guide to &Beyond Ngala Private Game Reserve. Compare the classic Safari Lodge with the chic Tented Camp, and secure your dates.

Ngala Private Game Reserve

Exclusive Access to the Kruger’s Wildest Frontier

Meaning “Lion” in the local Shangaan language, Ngala holds a legendary status in the South African safari industry. It holds the prestigious title of being the very first private game reserve to be incorporated into the world-famous Kruger National Park.

What does this mean for your safari? It means you get the absolute best of both worlds. You benefit from the immense, unfenced biodiversity of the Kruger’s 2 million hectares, combined with the exclusive traversing rights of a 14,700-hectare private concession. There are no public vehicles permitted here. It is just you, your &Beyond guide, and the African wilderness.

Ngala is particularly famous for its massive breeding herds of elephant and buffalo, its resident prides of lions, and the frequent presence of the highly endangered African Wild Dog. Whether you seek the romantic, contemporary canvas of Ngala Tented Camp or the classic, family-friendly charm of Ngala Safari Lodge, this reserve delivers an uncrowded, pristine wildlife experience.

What to Expect

Exclusive Kruger Traversing

Unlike staying at public Kruger camps, staying at Ngala allows your guide to drive off-road to track predators. You also enjoy night drives with a spotlight, revealing the secretive world of nocturnal hunters like leopards and hyenas.

The Ngala Treehouse

A completely unique offering. You can book an overnight sleep-out in a luxurious, multi-level treehouse situated miles away from the main camp. Surrounded by a protective boma, you sleep under the Milky Way with a stocked bar and a midnight picnic.

Rhino Notching & Conservation

For a truly impactful experience, guests can (by prior arrangement and at an additional cost) participate in a rhino notching conservation experience, flying in a helicopter with a veterinary team to help dart and microchip a rhino for anti-poaching purposes.

Walking Safaris

Experience the bush on foot. Ngala offers specialized walking safaris led by armed, highly trained trails guides, allowing you to focus on the micro-ecosystems, tracks, and flora that you miss from a vehicle.

Getting There

The easiest access is via a scheduled commercial flight into Hoedspruit Airport (HDS), followed by a 45-minute road transfer through the reserve. Alternatively, we can arrange a private Federal Air charter directly to Ngala’s private airstrip.

Conservation Fees

As part of the Kruger/Timbavati ecosystem, specialized conservation levies and gate fees apply. African Wildlife Plains ensures these are seamlessly built into your itinerary so there are no surprise costs upon arrival.

Climate & Packing

Ngala is stunning year-round. Winter (May-August) is dry with excellent visibility and cold mornings. Summer (November-March) is hot, green, and fantastic for birding. Always pack neutral colors and a warm jacket for early morning drives.

Rock Lodge vs. Safari Lodge

Ngala Safari Lodge

Best for families, multi-generational groups, and lovers of classic safari architecture. It features 20 thatched cottages tucked under a canopy of mopane and tamboti trees, a magnificent pool, and expansive lawns. It is highly welcoming to children of all ages and runs the exceptional WILDchild program.

Ngala Tented Camp

Best for couples, honeymooners, and design enthusiasts. With only 9 luxurious canvas tents set on elevated platforms overlooking the sandy Timbavati riverbed, this camp is intimate, modern, and deeply romantic. Note: Ngala Tented Camp does not permit children under 12.
